Carol Fallows and War Brides

WWI_Soldier_And_Mistletoe.jpgI am the daughter of a war bride from World War II and an Australian pilot. I grew up with the story about how my parents met and had always wanted to know more.

So in 2000 I persuaded my publisher, Random House, that there was a book in this. As I started to read the newspapers and magazines of the period I quickly became aware that my mother was not alone - there were thousands of women (and even a few men) who fell in love with an Aussie during World War II and married them.

The more I delved the more I found. I soon discovered that thousands of women similarly fell for Aussies during the Great War - and that there was also a huge immigration of these women, many with children at the end of this war. So of course it followed that other wars brought other women to Australia.

I have always had enormous admiration for the women from countries on the other side of the world, and from different cultures, who having fallen in love with an Aussie during a war, came to Australia, often knowing very little about this country.

The  ‘war bride movements’ as a result of the two World Wars, the Korean and the Vietnam wars have had little recognition and had very little written about them. Most Aussies think of a war bride as an Australian woman who married an American GI.

When I began the research for Love & War. Stories of War Brides from the Great War to Vietnam  in the year 2000, the newspapers and magazines of the times, together with the accounts from the women themselves, were the major sources for information.

This website is intended as a resource for those wanting to know more about war brides – about Australia at the time they arrived – and as a resource for those who want to research a family history that includes a war bride.
